We never think about the past in order to learn from the mistakes do we? We continue to do what has been going on for ages without even thinking if it was right or not. We just continue to believe in some of the disgusting and chauvinistic tendancies ever, just because we are told, that it is the INDIAN custom.
Even today we hear of parents of a girl worrying about marrying her off, if we ask them why they are giving so much priority to the girl's marriage, the answer we get is, ' But that is the ultimate aim for a girl is anyway isn't it? To be a good wife and a mother.'
Well i dont think so, i honestly dont think that girls are only born to reproduce a few more potential housewives or the scoundrels who oppress them. It is so common to still encounter problems in a house where the wife wants to work and have a friend circle which doesn't seem to go down well with the parents in law and the husband in most cases often ends up siding with his parents like an absolute fruitcake. I mean, people still have problems with women wearing jeans for god's sake, what is with that? who gave them the idea that they can oppose anything and everything even if it has nothing to do with them in any shape or size. who has given men the right to expect women to play second fiddle to them even if they are capable of overtaking them? Hundreds of families are still torn apart by tension because the wife could not deliver the man with a SON, what is so special about a male child that the birth of a female child cannot fulfill? For one thing, it has been proven that male babies throw a hell of a lot more tantrums than baby girls do, so they are basically a huge source of trouble from a very early stage. Sign of things to come eh.
Somehow an idea has been instilled in boys that they can expect modes of conduct from women, conducting themselves like TRUE INDIAN women-not having a life of their own, often not being properly educated, even if they are educated often being forced to sacrifice that education in order to get married and make the parents happy with grandchildren and basically have only two identities- be an object for pleasurable use in bed, and then get up in the mornings to make breakfast, then lunch and dinner. For who? the scoundrel who did nothing but USED her in bed last night. That is very nice isn't it? Makes us all proud to call ourselves Indians, a land that consists of Humbugs who pride themselves in using the possession of a penis as the only reason to boss over women. Well if that is the case and if what we mean by being Indian is to make sure that women are still just the shoe cream of the shoes that men wear, then I can safely say that I am absolutely ashamed to call myself an Indian.
This is the land where people start burning effigies of those who say that pre-marital sex is fine as long as the protections against unwanted pregnancies and diseases are taken, this is the land where we have 36 odd defamation cases filed against the actress for saying so; something which is actually in public health interest.
But no!! off course the people wont like that will they? Because we are INDIANS, it is better to force a woman into sex once once she has been forcibly married to you and make her have baby after baby untill you get that desired boy, but it is not fine if a person talks about consensual and responsible forms of maintaining a physical relationship. The moment someone talks about pre-marital sex, it is looked upon as a crime, yet when the girl is married off, the only expectations that most families have from there on is for them for them to deliver a kid almost overnight. If its a boy then its a festival, the whole year is. But if it is a girl, Ah Well, there's always next time isn't it?
This is not it though, we pride ourselves in much more than just forcing women into being reduced to objects, we are a nation that is useless enough to start a cotroversy if the Indian flag appears somewhere close to the knee of the sari Mandira Bedi is wearing, one which contains the flags of all the nations participating in the world cup. Not only do we have nothing better to do, but those who had actually managed to take there eyes off her cleavage and spot the Indian Flag near her knee, they actually call up TV channels and Radio phone-ins to tell how she has brought shame upon the nation. Well I've got news for them, it is these people who bring shame upon us, it is them who portray how useless and idiotic the people of this country really are to delve with trivial issues such as where the Indian flag managed to appear on a peti piece of body wear.
Then off course there was the Richrd Gere-Shilpa Shetty kissing issue which once again managed to pull off another stunt displaying the worthlessness of the people filing cases against Gere and Shetty and actaully demanding an apology for what they had done as a funny imprompto act on stage. The rest of the world just laughed about it, but the people in our country? Made asses of themselves by creating a furore over this and giving the world a further few reasons to laugh about.
Lastly, we have homosexuals as well, who are looked down upon by people who consider it immoral to engage in intimate relationships with another person of the same sex. And this comes from the people of a country where young girls are raped and murdered almost every other day and their killers either walk free, or get sentenced after a decade or so only to be faced by cries of support for his release. The idea of consent in India has bever really been accepted, i suppose it is all right for a man to forcibly have sex with a girl as long as it is a heterosexual act, but the moment we talk about homosexual relationships, no matter how consensual they might be, they still are viewed as disgusting.
The police proudly say that it is actually illegal to engage in homosexual acts in India. But my question is WHY should it be so? Why should a relationship between two individuals be punished just because the rest of the nation expects them to join their chauvinist leagues and help them oppress women instead?
And all these issues are still pondered over when we have much greater issues to try and rectify-illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, crime. They are all related and if one gives it a close thought, then he/she may well realise that the root of all problems today in India are due to the conservative thinking which has led to this disgusting tendancy of prefering boys over girls, marrying them off at a young age, and expecting nothing but baby after baby after baby. This in turn increases the population and that has led us to our present uncontrolable state, where people dont have jobs, food, home, money, and the crime just keeps ascending at a speed, which an F1 racer would have been proud of.
We seriously need to re think our ideas and especially men realy need to do some serious pondering over the chauvinist tendancies that most of us still have. even today young boys do not want their girlfriens to wear skirts, the reason-It is because indian girls are not supposed to do that. well the idea needs to change, or the way i see it, no amount of technological advancements and increase in the number of multiplexes can carry the country forward, untill the people stop dwelling on thoughts which might not even deserve a place in the stone age.
